The Academy maintains a strong network with industries, chambers, organisations, and other social and business associations to access their cooperation and support for various activities.
Industry Visits & Field Trips
Students are frequently taken on industry and corporate visits to understand the practical implementation of knowledge at the workplace. These are held in and around the city as well as in other towns. Some of the industrial organisations recently visited by the students include TATA Motors, Jayshree Textiles, Titagarh Industries, Tribeni Tissues, Kesoram Rayon and TISCO. During the latest industry tours, students of about 75 postgraduate students were taken in batches to Orissa Cement Limited at Rajganjpur, Orissa and Tata Tinplates Limited at Jamshedpur, Jharkhand on October 19 – 20, 2006 and November 28, 2006 respectively. While the former was an overnight one the latter was a daylong tour. The students were accompanied by the faculty and were shown around the company facilities by the company officials in both the sites. It was a knowledgeable exposure for the students in terms of understanding the Operations of reputed industrial setups.
Seminars
APEX organises various seminars and panel discussions related to current topics of interest by inviting eminent speakers from the industry to come and share their views. While these are held for a general and large student audience, some talk-shops are conducted specifically for smaller groups wherein a senior executive / manager comes in to have an informal chat session and share his or her personal experiences. The seminars that have been conducted by APEX during the current academic year were great successes with students from other colleges too coming in to draw from the panel discussion. During the first half of the year APEX in collaboration with Calcutta Management Association hosted a panel discussion on "Choosing One’s Own Career Path" on February 25, 2006. A host of corporate hot-shots like Barun Das of Exide Industries, Rita Bhimani, the PR Expert, Siddharth Pansari of the Pansari Group of Companies and Anamitra Chatterjee of Price Water House Coopers talked about the latest economic trends and the opportunities presented to today’s youth by the same. In the last leg of the year, a Talk Show was organised on November 18 wherein celebrity icons Nondon Bagchi and Oindrilla Dutt exchanged their views on a less academic topic - ‘If Fusion be the Food of Love – Let it Play on’ with Barun Das.
Visiting Lectures
Experts from industry are frequently invited to disseminate lectures and teach on various subjects where considerable practical experience is an added advantage. Students are getting their first exposure to corporate practices in their monthly ‘Adda Sessions’ with executives from the industry. The Institute is aiming at having at least one such session targeted at different specialisation in both Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels. Recently we have had sessions on topics related to Human Resources and Technology Implementation with varied speakers, both independent consultant as well as company executives coming in to share their experiences with our students.
Internships and Projects
There are frequent requests from companies for providing human resources to conduct short term project assignments, internships, and other practical training opportunities. The Academy proactively seeks such liaisons and places students in these partnering organisations, thereby providing a fantastic practical and real life learning platform. The companies that shortlisted students in the current academic year for internship / project work are Hughes Communication, Kotak Insurance, Reliance Insurance, SKP Securities, Anderson Printing House, Jayshree Tea Company, Indiabulls Securities, ICICI Prudential etc. Kotak Insurance was highly impressed with the project work of our students and visited us twice in the current year.
Management Trainee Initiative
APEX has tie-ups with various companies to enable its students to learn and earn at the same time. During the tenure of their studies with us, students may be placed with a few organisations to work as trainees, thereby carrying on both learning and working activities simultaneously. Good performers are always rewarded with full time placement at the company after the course is completed. |
