APEX of education The Calcutta-based Academy for Professional Excellence (APEX) is assisting the government of Mizoram in revitalising its teaching establishment. APEX has been entrusted with running a training programme for 16,000 state-level teachers to increase their proficiency in English and other general teaching skills. The education minister of Mizoram, Dr. R. Lalthangliana, inaugurated the project on August 28 at Aizawl and Lunglei.

Cambridge experts for Mizo reachers AIZAWL, Sept 11: Aiming to upgrade the educational standard, the Mizoram government has adopted University of Cambridge International Examination (UCIE) model of ‘Training in English and General Teaching Skills’ for school teachers of the state. A group of 15 experts from Cmabridge has started yearlong training in the first batch following a MoU signed last March with Cambridge University and its affiliates Academy for Professional Excellence and First English Education Institutes Ltd.. Describing the government initiative, state Education minister Dr. R. Lalthangliana said, “We want our future generations to come up with an excellent command over English and for which we initiated the move and believe other NE states would follow it”. The state would spend Rs 350 lakh a year, for five years, envisages giving training to all 16,000 teachers of government and private schools in the state. About 2000 teachers have been selected to undergo training in the first batch which would be conducted at 6 centres in Aizawl and two centres in Lunglei.

APEX scales Mizoram What is the link between Kolkata and the Mizoram government’s education enhancement schemes? It is Kolkata based Academy for Professional Excellence (APEX). It would be assisting the government of India’s second-most literate state Mizoram, in revitalising it’s existing education system for academicians.
APEX has been entrusted with pioneering a comprehensive training programme for 16,000 state-level teachers to increase their proficiency in English and other general teaching skills.
The project was inaugurated by the education minister of Mizoram, Dr. R. Lalthangliana and kickstarted on August 28 for teachers at Aizawl and Lunglei. The response has been overwhelming and there are possibilities of it being lauched at other states as well.
APEX, an associate partner of the University of Cambridge International Examination (UCIE), that has formulated the training programme, considers this project to be a major milestone. ‘While we have been offering various teacher training solutions and programmes to schools and colleges all over India and abroad, this project reaffirms or position as a leading teacher training organisation in this part of the world’ declares Nirmal Agarwal, Director & CEO of the institute.

State Marches Ahead in Literacy AIZAWL, Aug 23: Mizoram has a literacy rate of 90.27 – just a shade less than Kerala, the foremost state in the country in this respect which has 91 per cent literacy. Efforts have been taken to ensure that Mizoram surpasses Kerala in literacy levels within this year, Mizoram School Education Minister R. Lalthangliana told media today. Stressing on the quality of education as well, he said academicians from Cambridge University would soon be coming here to train the state’s teachers. In regard to the universalisation of education, he said the number of children between 6-14 years of age who did not go to school was almost 30,000 in 2003. But efforts made under the Sarva Shiksya Abhiyan helped the number to be reduced to 4,305, who were residents of the remotest and most difficult terrains of the state in Saiha, Lunglei and Lawngtlai districts, he said.
Bru refugees, who had recently returned from Tripura were also were yet to send their children to schools, he said adding there were people belonging to some religious sects who refused send their children to school. However their number had declined considerably during recent months.
